How Does Play-based Learning Set Your Child Up For Success?

Play-based learning must be a part of every childcare classroom to set children up for success in the future. Creative and innovative minds grow and thrive when presented with subject material in a fun and engaging way. Play-based learning accomplishes this.

Creative Childcare understands the value of play-based learning. Learning through play is a proven method for shaping young minds. This effective learning strategy is prioritised in our curriculum that we use universally at all our locations.

What is a play-based approach to learning?

Humans are hard-wired to play. Scientists have studied this phenomenon for years, trying to figure out ways to suppress the urge. So far, they’ve been unsuccessful.

Since playing is ingrained in our brains, it only makes sense to take advantage of that instinct when learning new skills. A true play-based approach leaves room for both child-initiated and adult-supported learning. When children are encouraged to expand their ideas, they become more skilled at problem-solving and critical thinking.

Understanding the value of play-based learning

Humans learn best through first-hand experiences. Children are no different. Hands-on learning motivates and stimulates their brains while supporting the development of essential skills like communication and concentration.

Play-based learning also builds social skills like sharing and turn-taking that children need throughout their school-aged years and beyond. The most effective way to stimulate a child’s desire to master their environment is through play. As a bonus, reenacting experiences help children retain the knowledge they’ve gained.

Tips for encouraging play-based learning at home

Play-based learning techniques vary depending on the age of the child. The following are some of the best strategies to use at home with toddlers and preschool-aged children.

1. Introduce manipulatives

Make sure children have access to manipulatives like playdough and sand and water tables to pique their curiosity and encourage imagination. Children learn best when they can explore different colours, shapes, and textures.

2. Get outside

The world is full of adventure, so encourage children to go outside to learn more about their environment. Visits to the local park or zoo can introduce new concepts to young minds.

3. Limit screen time

While children can and do learn using tablets and other electronic devices, they should not get the bulk of their experiences through a digital device. When screens are off, children must turn to their imaginations to find ways to grow and learn.

4. Support free time

Child-led playtime is crucial for building soft skills and reaching developmental milestones. Children learn how to self-regulate while enjoying the freedom to explore their environments when given ample free time each day.
